Campervan Build

We ended our last post with the promise to show you
how we transformed our van.

It is a work in progress.
Our 2014 Ram Promaster Van
we have named Roadrunner.
It was a commercial van full of shelves, which we sold.
Thankfully, Joel came over with his power tools
to tear it all apart!!
After it was cleaned out we made a floor pattern out of
cardboard to cut the plywood, insulation and vinyl,
which made it so much easier.
Cutting the mini cell insulation into strips to fill in the ribs.
Next we laid down a whole sheet of insulation.
To quiet road noise strips of Fat Mat Rattletrap
were put on the wheel wells.
Three sheets of plywood needed to be cut and sanded.
We used the holes that the shelves were installed
to bolt down the plywood nice and solid.
Vinyl flooring.
We wanted permanent beds so you can use them at any time.
 There is also a table
that goes in between for dining and games.
Four inches of memory foam with two inches of
dense foam makes a nice comfortable bed.
Finished off the sides and ends for storage.
Added a large wire rack across the whole back
which adds lots of storage.
Here is our kitchen. We cut out the hole for the sink
which is attached to a 6 gallon water container and
a foot pump operates the whole system.
Our two burner Coleman stove
fits on the counter or we can take it outside.
Removing the ladder rack.
The portable toilet in the center is concealed
in a wood box with hinges. There is also
a privacy curtain that drops down from above.
Reinstalled the steel panels behind the seats
along with a black out curtain.
Nothing fancy but it sure is functional.
Low maintenance, 17 miles a gallon,
comfortable and we are able to go everywhere.
Custom made screens that magnetically close
to keep the bugs out.
With sliding doors on both sides we get great circulation.
After going to the Wilcox West Fest
Ranch Rodeo & Chuck Wagon Cook-Off
we camped at Indian Bread Rocks.
Since we are fully self-contained we love boondocking.
Here we are just east of Phoenix.
No neighbors and beautiful sunsets!

38 years ago we started with a 2-person tent and camped across three provinces of Canada.
Of course, it rained the second day and our stuff never dried out. For the last 18 years we traveled
in Class C motorhomes of different sizes. Now we have downsized to a campervan.
This isn't for everyone! We are known as the Two Crazy Kids.
Ready for more adventures in life!

Thanks for overlooking our errors and misspellings in the blog.

What a crazy time it has been in the world!!

Sadly, we lost a few friends.
Our hearts and prayers go to all those who lost loved ones.

To keep our sanity we have been going on
 local trips around Arizona.
We hope you enjoy some Arizona photos!
is just a few miles south from our place in Green Valley.
Click on the link to find out more.
Saguaro National Park is one of our favorite places
to see blooms and wildlife like the Gila Monster below.
More exciting Gila Monster stories in upcoming blogs!
The desert can be a beautiful place. It still amazes us
that the cactus can produce such large beautiful flowers!
In Ironwood Forest National Monument we found
a very unusual Saguaro with over 40 arms
and a Red Tail Hawk.
Saguaro blooms from the top using my camera on a pole.
This cute guy came to visit us in our back yard.
Look close to see how he is keeping his back feet cool.
It is fun to watch the hummingbirds in our yard.
Like most communities we were there to cheer

on the front line workers during the pandemic.
Charron Winery is about 40 minutes to the east and is
higher in elevation, which is a fantastic little spot to hang out.

Scott was able to have surgery on his right wrist
which took several months to recover.

It was great to sit on the deck and watch
one of the monsoon storms!
To celebrate Scott & Joel's birthdays
we rented a jeep in Sedona for the day.
I think you can tell the guys were having a fantastic time!!
The round formation you see is the Merry Go Round Rock.
It is up Schnebly Hill east of Sedona.
This road was a challenge even in the Jeep!
We sold our RV early in 2020 but still wanted to travel
so several months later we bought a Ram Promaster van.
Over the next five months we did our own camper van build.
More about that process next time!

We would love to hear what you did in 2020!

New Mexico and Arizona

West of Taos there is a community of passive solar homes.
Earthship Biotecture. Interesting.
Click on the link to a learn more and watch
a one minute video.
If you are looking for somewhere different to stay,
 there are some for rent.

Guess Where This Is
We are not surprised that we didn't get any guesses
from our last blog. Earthship Biotecture in Taos.
Beautiful area and a neat concept.
Right on the rim of the Rio Grande del Norte
National Monument is where we stayed
while visting Taos, New Mexico.

Hiking 1.2 miles down Big Arsenic Trail with all the
switchbacks was interesting,
but hiking back up was challenging!

You also have the option of carrying all your camping gear
down here to camp. Not an option in our world.
We did talk to a group of 30 kids who meet
and camp here for a week every year.
We hiked another .3 of a mile to see the petroglyphs.
On our way back up there was plenty of time to rest
and take more photos.
Lots of hummingbirds were at the feeders.

Later that same day we went to the Wild River
Visitor Center to hear two ladies talk about
Pinon nut picking and a little about the culture in the area,
which was very interesting. They even made cookies
with Pinon nuts and Pinon nut rolls which was
a lot of work since there were about 60 people
who attended! Delicious!
In the northwest corner of New Mexico we stopped and
visited Salmon Ruins and Aztec Ruins National Monument.
The round room on the right is The Great Kiva and was a
sanctuary and a place for people to meet for community events.
One unique feature is the corner doorway on
the second floor. We were allowed to crawl
through this low door
and go into several rooms!
Back in Arizona!
Thankfully, we have seen the Grand Canyon several times
because this time at the north rim they were doing some
controlled burning and the canyon was full of smoke.
We felt bad for all the international visitors.
But there was about 300 Bison we were able to sit and watch.
After leaving the north rim of the Grand Canyon we stopped
to see the kids and had a great time. So blessed to have them
in Arizona and there is so much laughter when we get together.
This is our last blog for a while. Thanks for reading!
